PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION ACCESSIBLE TO ALL LEARNERS THROUGH EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES FOR THE ATTAINMENT OF SELF-RELIANCE AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Goals:The Ministry of Education is set to positively influence and reshape the present educational system in the state with a view to improving capacity and performance outcomes by redirecting and optimizing resources, designing effective policies, setting time lines in order to maximize educational excellence and progressively move towards the attainment of the desired quality education standards.
Objectives:To provide enriched educational experience for students in schools through the provision of quality standards, pedagogy excellence, appropriate teaching methods or approaches, learning resources and instructional materials that are all indispensable ingredients that guarantee high-quality education leading to stimulating learning experience and excellent performance.
Education as we all know remains the only veritable tool of socio-economic development, and the only legacy worth bequeathing to our children. This realization was the only thing needed for the government and administration of Lagos State to put in place proper and sustainable foundation for the educational system in our state to foster even development.
For the records, Lagos state is not isolated from the 6-3-3-4 system of education and we also operate the National Curriculum on education as stipulated by the Federal Government of Nigeria. We must also state here that, we have the highest number of both Primary and Secondary schools in the country which translates to us having the highest number of student’s population, despite its various challenges; we have since realized that they gave us the impetus to find solution to problems easily as they affect education in our state.
For effective administration of education policies in Lagos State, we have the Ministry of Education ably supported by the Office of the Special Adviser, having Honourable Commissioner and Special Adviser respectively as the head, with the support of the Permanent Secretary.
Lagos State also championed the creation of Education Districts, and we have professional Teachers as Tutor-General/Permanent Secretaries in all our 6 Districts to monitor and administer the day to day running of schools under their districts from Primary to Senior Secondary levels.
The following Departments and Units are saddled with various responsibilities, Finance and Administration, Planning, Research and Statistics, Science and Technology, Curriculum Services, Examination Board, Private Education and Special Programmes, Basic Education Services, Inspectorate, Education Resource Centre, Accounts, Multi-lingual Centre, Projects, Public Affairs, ICT and Procurement Units.
The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) is in charge of Primary education up to the Junior Secondary School level and we have a total of 1001-primary schools and 339 Junior Secondary Schools.
-Formulation of policy guidelines for implementation of UBE programmes.
-prescribing minimum standards for the UBE programmes.
-Collating and preparing periodic master plans for UBE programmes.
-identifies areas of possible intervention in the provision of adequate basic educational facilities.
– active collaboration with state government, ETF and UBEC.
-handles construction, rehabilitation and renovation of primary and junior secondary schools.
SENIOR SECONDARY EDUCATION
The Basic Education Services Department serves as the clearing house for all matters affecting the day to day running of the senior secondary schools and also coordinates the External Examinations such as WAEC and BECE. We have 319 Senior Secondary Schools in the state.
The Private Education and Special Programmes Department handles all matters affecting Private schools in the state, they carry out the following functions;
-Registration of private schools.
-Pre and post approval inspections.
The Lagos State Vocational and Technical Education Board is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the smooth running of our 5 Technical colleges.
LAGOS STATE EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (LASGEMS)
The management of information on students has brought management of school data to public domain. The system has data of all students in both public and private schools and can be accessed on-line. Each student is assigned a personal identification number and issued an ID card. The system has helped us in uploading the list of candidates and subjects for registration process for WAEC examinations.
TEACHERS ESTABLISHMENT AND PENSIONS OFFICE (TEPO)
TEPO is saddled with the responsibility of training and manpower development, Establishment and Pensions matters, welfare of staff in the Education Districts, relations with industrial Unions and the registration of professional teachers in the state employ.

SUPPORT OUR SCHOOLS INITIATIVE (SOS)
The realization that government cannot fund education alone even if all the budget of the state is earmarked for education sector has made us to seek for assistance from Corporate bodies and public spirited individuals. We have through this programme had interventions from various organizations and individuals which cut across provision of school facilities, enhancement of learning experiences, human capacity development, provision of scholarship/grants as well as incentives/awards/recognition for students and teachers.
SERVICE CHARTER- RE POSITIONING OUR BRAND
The Service Delivery Unit of the Ministry of Education was established to transform the public service to a transform the public service to a result oriented organization that delivers on government, social contract with the people and also to improve public confidence in services offered by government. Thus, since one of the duties of the Service Delivery Unit is to transform the Ministry which is one of its core objectives, therefore, apart from administrative transformation, physical transformation is also tremendously catered for in the ministry. Recently, the Service Delivery Unit (Service Charter) transformed the front desk office by redecorating and refurnishing, and reposition the ministry for a new customer service experience for both visitors and the front desk officers. Callers Groups Lines have been installed for easy and effective communication for easy and effective communication for both staff and customers of the ministry. A new initiative – one – day sanitation exercise on quarterly basis has been approved by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Mr. Odeyemi which will kick start in Year 2017 to promote safe and clean environment.
