SUBEB SEEKS IMPROVEMENT OF LEARNING IN SCHOOLS
Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, has called on the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to remain steadfast about school improvement and judicious use of the funds recently released by the Federal Government for the improvement of government-owned primary schools in Lagos State.
The SUBEB Chairman, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King made the call recently during a three-day training on project implementation for committee members of SBMC in order to achieve excellent project implementation.
The School-Based Management Committee is an innovative strategy introduced by Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to re-direct basic education delivery through increased meaningful engagement and participation of school level actors, especially SBMC, in school improvement activities.
Alawiye-King, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Board Member in charge of Social Mobilisation Department in LASUBEB, Mr. Sijuade Idowu-Tiamiyu urged members of SBMC to key into the mantra of LASUBEB – “leave no child behind”, through improvement in the number of enrollees in government-owned schools.
“You are already doing a lot but we expect that with the funding that you are accessing now, you will be able to do more. We want to increase enrolment; the goal of this Board is to leave no child behind. So we want to ensure that we have improved enrolment in our schools,” Alawiye-King averred.
He reminded the SBMC that their positive performance will encourage the Federal Government to invest more funds for improvement of primary schools across the State, maintaining that the funding makes it compelling for the committee to make its presence felt more than in the past.
Alawiye-King disclosed that 63 schools are benefiting from the programme and commended the committee members for their selfless services towards the development of basic education in various communities.
The event was held in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission and had several diverse stakeholders in attendance including Civil Society Organisations, Mothers Union, Education Secretaries and Head Teachers among others.
